Specialist Services For CareGivers /Housekeepers
Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), families can hire foreign caregivers. However, the caregivers must:
- Provide care on a full-time basis (minimum 30 hours per week)
- Work in the private household where the care is being provided
- Meet the requirements set by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)/Service Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Now Families or private household employers will be able to hire foreign workers as ‘Housekeepers’ on an LMIA-based work permit under a temporary foreign worker program.

The Caring for Children Program ended on June 18, 2019. If you submitted a complete application before June 18, IRCC will continue to process it.
If you’re a caregiver who has been caring for children in Canada, you may be eligible for the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.
Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program
Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program ended on June 18, 2019. If you submitted a complete application before June 18, 2019, IRCC will continue to process it.
If you’re a caregiver who has been working in Canada as a home support worker, you may be eligible for the Home Support Worker Pilot.
Please note that HCCP and HSWP programs will be maturing in June 2024. Please stay tuned for future announcements.
Working as a Caregiver: Things you should know
- If you recently worked as a home childcare provider or support worker, your experience may count toward your eligibility for permanent residence
- Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot give you an open work permit to come to Canada and work temporarily. Find out more here
